In today’s session we talked about research methods that we encountered in our two and a half years of studying. For me the most important ones are the ones have direct exchange with other people, especially people that are familiar with the topic. Such as interviews, talks and cultural probes, because they give personal and direct feedback. Additionally desk research is quite valuable to explore the topics to collect inspiration through related projects and related readings.
The assignment for today was to search for 8 readings that correlate with our topic of interest and make a detailed literature review of it. Additionally we had to look for 8 related work project, review them and put them in a visualization that displays the fields we are interested in.
During my studies in Interaction Design, I more and more realized how biased artificial intelligence and coded technology in general can be. Due to the lack of ethical and cultural aspects, humans may be discriminated against by machines. These biases can occur very present in the coding of simple machines like a soap dispenser that only dispenses soap when a white surface activates the sensor, as well as quite invisible like algorithms that filter the information you receive and therefore put you in an isolated bubble.
For my bachelor thesis, I would be interested in trying to break certain points of these coded biases and create a more inclusive environment.
